Finding Balance After 5,000 Nautical Miles: Why Switzerland is the Perfect Homecoming
What’s better than dry land? Switzerland.
After navigating over 5,000 nautical miles through the Arctic, I’ve earned my swallow tattoo and a lifetime of unforgettable memories. Six months at sea brought moments of pure joy and absolute terror, but it also taught me lessons that I’m carrying forward as I step back onto solid ground. Now, I’m thrilled to return to Switzerland, just in time for the much-loved shoulder season.
The Arctic: A Journey of Joy and Terror
Sailing through the Arctic is not for the faint of heart. From battling unpredictable weather to experiencing awe-inspiring natural beauty, this adventure was equal parts thrilling and humbling. Every mile covered added a new chapter to the story, culminating in a sense of accomplishment that’s hard to put into words.
As much as I cherished the experience, there’s something uniquely comforting about returning home to Switzerland. The crisp autumn air, the golden hues of the shoulder season, and the promise of reconnecting with familiar faces is a transition I’ve been eagerly anticipating.
Embracing the Swiss Shoulder Season
Switzerland’s shoulder season, with its quiet beauty and slower pace, feels like the perfect antidote to months of intense adventure. It’s a time to reflect, recharge, and re-establish connections. Whether it’s a stroll through a city park, a hike in the Alps, or simply enjoying a coffee in a cozy café, there’s no shortage of ways to soak in the season.
The Balance of Work and Life
Spending six months at sea has also reinforced an important lesson: balance isn’t something reserved for retirement. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that 18-65 is for work, and 65+ is for balance, but the truth is, you can have both. Often, the door to balance is locked from the inside, waiting for us to turn the key.
For me, sailing was part of finding that balance; a way to step outside the daily grind and reconnect with a sense of purpose and adventure. Now, back in Switzerland, I’m ready to embrace the next chapter with a renewed perspective.
Looking Ahead
As I settle back into city life, I’m excited to reconnect with the people and places that make Switzerland feel like home. This experience has reminded me that balance isn’t about escaping responsibilities but about finding joy and meaning in the journey. Whether on land or at sea, the key is to stay open to opportunities and create moments that matter.
Here’s to the adventures behind us and the ones still to come. Switzerland, I’m ready for you!
